Genesis Notes

Below are simple notes I jotted down while listening to the KJV of the book of Genesis.

- ch. 8 21 highlight

- ch. 12 a famine in the land brought Abram into Egypt just like later generations with Jacob and his son Joseph, also the Lord brought plagues on Egypt because of Sarai, just like he did through Moses later, Pharoah sends Abram away just as later Pharoah sent Moses and Israel away vv. 1-3 Abrahamic Covenant

- ch. 13 Abram left Egypt being rich in cattle, silver, and gold just like Israel later. v. 10 Lot compares the Jordan Valley (the promised land) to the garden of Eden, well watered everywhere

- ch. 15 vv. 4-6 Abrahamic Covenant; faith brings Abram righteousness, God tells Abram about his children being slaves for 400 years in Egypt, and gives him the promised land

- ch. 17 Abrahamic Covenant again, kings will come from you Abraham, circumcision as sign or "token" (KJV) of the covenant

- ch. 19 Moabites and Ammonites came from Lot's daughters sleeping with him

- ch. 20 God tells Abimelech that Abram is a prophet

- ch. 22 God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, God sees Abraham has not withheld his only son, this points forward to God not forsaken his only son Jesus as a sacrifice for all of Abraham's offspring

- ch. 23 Sarah dies

- ch. 24 Abraham wants Isaac to have a wife from his people

- ch. 25 Abraham dies, buried w/ Sarah, God blessed Isaac, Rebecca was barren, Esau & Jacob, Esau becomes Edom of the Edomites, Jacob becomes, later, Israel

- ch. 26 Famine again, Abrahamic Covenant repeated by God to Isaac, Isaac says his wife is his sister like Abraham!

- ch. 27 Rebecca and Jacob decieve Isaac to get the birthright

- ch. 28 Jacob's ladder, God repeates the Abrahamic covenant to Jacob, even does it while Jacob is asleep like w/ Abraham

- ch. 29 Now Jacob gets tricked and gets Leah when he was workign for Rachel, then also get's Rachel for 7 more years of work, Rachel was barren - a repeating theme

- ch. 30 Rachel gives Bilha her maidservant to Jacob, just like Sarah, the tribes of Israel come from different moms and infidelity, because of Jacob, Laban has become rich in livestock

- ch. 31 God speaks to Laban not to harm Jacob, Jacob made a covenant with Laban as a witness between each other

- ch. 32 Jacob returns to Esau, Jacob prays for protection from his brother Esau, God repeats Abrahamic covenant to Jacob, offspring as sand of sea, Jacob wrestles with an angel, the angel renames Jacob Israel "shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed."

- ch. 33 Esau accepts Jacob

- ch. 34 Dinah defiled, trick them into getting circumcized then wreck them all

- ch. 35 Abrahamic covenant repeated to Jacob, also Davidic covenant a little bit, kings will come from your offspring, Isaac "gave up the ghost" KJV and died

- ch. 36 tons of weird names, "dukes" in KJV Esau is the Edomites

- ch. 37 generations of Jacob, Joseph tells everyone about his dream where all bow to him, brothers sell him into slavery to Ishmaelites, sold into Egypt, brought coat dipped in animal blood to Jacob, he mourns and refused to be comforted

- ch. 38 Judah unknowingly sleeps w/ his widowed daughter in-law Tamar

- ch. 39 Joseph becomes overseer of Egyptian's house, till his wife ruins it all, gets him sent into prison, but the Lord was with Joseph then Joseph becomes in charge of the prison and the Lord makes it all prosper

- ch. 40 Interprets dreams of cup bearer and chief baker, 3 days till returned to position for cup bearer, chief baker gets hung

- ch. 41 Pharoah has dream, cup bearer remembers Joseph, Joseph is put in charge of all of Egypt and saves tons of people from starvation, KJV uses the excellent word "dearth!"

- ch. 42 Jacob sends his kids to get food from Egypt, Joseph recognizes them, calls them spies, says to come back with their little brother

- ch. 43 run out of food, go back w/ little brother Benjamin with more money and gifts, they eat

- ch. 44 Joseph sends them away with his silver cup and money secretly stowed in their sacks, then sends men after them to bring them back, cup in Ben's sack, Joseph says he's his servant now, beg him not to

- ch. 45 Joseph can't stand it anymore, cries, reveals who he is, says to bring the family to Egypt where he'll care for them, it pleased Pharoah and his servants that Joseph's family was coming, Jacob's spirit is revived upon hearing Joseph lives, "she ass" LOL

- ch. 46 Israel goes to Egypt, gets a vision in the night, hears from God, repeats the Abrahamic Covenant, "shall make of thee a great nation," Jacob and Joseph are reunited

- ch. 47 Pharoah tells Joseph to make his family in charge of cattle, Jacob blesses Pharoah, Joseph saves all from the famine, Pharoah owns all because of famine, Jacob says don't bury me in Egypt

- ch. 48 Jacob repreats the Abrahamic covenant, says he'll bless his sons, Ephraim is blessed before Manasseh

- ch. 49 Jacob blesses his sons, Judah will rule, "all these are the 12 tribes of Israel," bury me in the cave w/ my people, where Abraham, Isaac, are buried, Jacob dies

- ch. 50 Jacob embalmed in the Egyptian way, Jacob goes and buries his father, w/ all the servants and elders of Egypt. Now that dad's dead Joseph's brothers freak out, but Joseph is kind and says, "you meant it for evil but God for good" Joseph dies at 110, is embalmbed in Egypt
