Below are simple notes I jotted down while reading the book of Exodus in the ESV.
children of Israel multiplied but new king knew not Joseph, noticed there were more children of Israel than Egyptians, so they feared them and enslaved them in bitter hard bondage in mortar, brick, and service in the field, king of Egypt told midwives to kill any male newborns, but they feared God and saved the baby boys saying the Israelites were lively and deliver before the midwives get to them, the people multiplied, then Egyptian king told them to cast all the male newbors into the river
Moses born and hidden three months for he was a "goodly child" LOL daughter of Pharoah finds Moses, adopts him, calls him Moses because she drew him out of the water, from ESV Study Bible: Moses. In Hebrew, the name sounds like the verb mashah, “to draw out” Moses murders a man who was beating a Hebrew, and hides him in the sand, then sees it was known so he fled to Midian, is brought to Reuel and marries his daughter Zipporah and lives with them | vv. 23-25 Israelites groan from slavery, cry to God for rescue, he hears them, and remembers his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God saw the people and knew
Moses keeps the flock of Jethro the priest of Midian - same dude as Reuel, different name | Moses came to "the mountain of God," Horeb - also known as Mount Sinai where he'll meet w/ God later and get the 10 commandments | burning bush! Moses is scared, God has heard of Israel's affliction and their cry, he's going to take them to a land flowing with milk and honey, tells Moses to go to Pharoah, Moses says "who am I?" God says he will be with him, Moses says what is his name? I AM that I AM, I Am has sent me unto you - Yahweh, God tells Moses exaclty how it's going to go before sending him
Moses lacks faith, God gives him the miracles of his rod becoming a serpant, Moses runs from it! LOL, also the miracle of his hand becoming leperous then healed, and river water turning to blood, Moses says he's not eloquent but slow of speach, God "who has maketh man's mouth?" Anger of the Lord kindled against Moses, says Aaron will speak for Moses, even tells Moses to Go to Egypt and that all who saught his life are dead, reminds me of Mary and Joseph w/ baby Jesus, Lord told Aaron to go meet Moses, gather elders of Israel and tell them what's up and they believed, bowed heads and worshipped
Moses asks Pharoah to let them go and worship, instead Pharoah calls them idle and gives them more labor making them gather their own straw to make bricks, Moses asks God why this is happening
God says, now you'll see what I'll do to Pharoah, I am the God of Abrahma, Isaac, and Jacob...and I have remembered my covenant | v. 7 HIGHLIGHT "I will be your God" | geneology of Moses and Aaron
v. 5 Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, hardened Pharoah's heart, water becomes blood
frogs everywhere! then lice! nasty, Pharoah "this is the finger of God" flies too, gross
all livestock of Egypt die, none of Israelites cattle die, boils, hail kills all Egyptian cattle
Locusts! Would have been a feast for Elijah and John the Baptist ;) thick darkness - that would be freaky!

The Passover, starting religious ceremonial stuff about how the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread will be celebrated by Israel in the Promised Land, the blood of the lamb saves the firstborn, making death pass over them - like Jesus the lamb's blood saves all of us from eternal death! | v. 29 at midnight the Lord smote the firstborn of all of Egypt | v.37 about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children - we don't think of them as a number this great, dang that's a lot of people!!!
Firstborn are the Lord's, passover is to remember what God did for the people of Israel, by strength of hand he brought them out of Egypt, pillar of cloud by day and fire by night
that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord, Egypt pursues by chariot, people are afraid to die, grumble, the Lord shall fight for you, makes the sea dry ground, Egyptians pursue, the Lord looked through the pillar of fire - reminds me of Sauron from LOTRs, Moses stretched out hand over sea, waters returned and covered all the host of Pharoah,
the song of Moses, awesome | 3 days and they murmered because they had no water, bitter water made sweet, "For I am the LORD that healeth thee"
more murmering, wish they were back in Egypt, the Lord reigns manna bread for them and quail, people rested on the 7th day, so they gathered on the 6th
more murmuring, Moses strikes stone to make water come out, Israel fights Amalek, Moses holds his hand up and they prevail, God tells Moses to write this as a memorial in a book - to write Scripture, And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The LORD Is My Banner
interesting that Jethro offers a burnt offering before God has the Israelites do that at Mt. Sinia later, Jethro says that faililng to delegate is "What you are doing is not good" - reminds me of when Pastors delegated stuff to deacons
Israel at Mt. Sinia, same place Moses saw the burning bush, ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, the people need to be cleansed for 3 days before God comes down in their presense, no one is to touch the mountain, smoke descended on the mountain and it shook greatly because the LORD came down upon it, that would have been freaky if you were Moses going up in to that
the ten commandments
stain
more commandments, eye for eye,
making restitution, wrongful sexual activity, misstreatment of people dealt with
commands for justice, Leave your produce for the less fortunate every seven days, rest on the seventh day, do not mention other gods, remember the established feasts, God will drive the inhabitnce of the land out before the Israelites so they can take the land, they shall have no other gods before them
Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and 70 elders come and worship from afar but Moses alone comes near to the Lord. Moses told the people all the words of God and they said they would do them and Moses wrote them all down. Moses made an altar and they sacrificed on it and he threw blood on it and on the people. They go up and behold God. God told Moses to come up to the mountain where he would give him the 10 Commandments. The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai in the cloud covered it and the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the side of the people. Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain and was there for 40 days.
contributions for the sanctuary so they can make everything, ark of the covenant from which God will speak to Moses and give him commandments for Israel, the showbread table, golden lampstands
instructions for building the tabernacle
the altar and court of the tabernacle are described, oil for the lamp that is to be tended to and burn throughout the generations
priest’s garments design, Aaron represents Israel before God when he goes into the temple
sin and wave and food and peace and drink offerings, God will meet with them there and dwell with them and be their god
altar of incense made, census tax - “Exodus 30:15 (ESV): give the Lord’s offering to make atonement for your lives.” Make atonement with a payment, bronze basin for washing, anointing oil and incense
artists filled with the spirit of God to make the holy things for the tabernacle, God instructs them to keep the Sabbath holy, God gives Moses the 10 Commandments, tablets of stone written by the finger of God!
ugh, the golden calf, come on Aaron! God wants his wrath to burn against them, Moses asks him to remember the covenant, Moses sees the people and burns the calf and scatters it on the water and makes them drink it, Moses has the sons of Levi kill about 3,000 men who turned from the Lord, Moses goes up the mountain again to make atonement and asks Moses to blot him out of God does r for with them, the Lord plagued the people,
God tells Moses to go to the land and an Angel will go before you but God wouldn’t go with them lest he consume them, when Moses pitched the tent outside of camp to speak with God, a pillar of smoke would go above the tent, Moses asks God to come with him, and God says his presence will go with them, Moses remarks on how it is that God’s presence going with them is what marks them as distinct from among all the people on the face of the earth, God says he’ll go with them because Moses has found favor in God’s sight and he knows Moses by name, Moses asks to see God’s glory, God says he can’t see him face to face to Moses will see God’s back
God tells Moses to cut 2 more tablets for God to write the commandments on, God proclaims his character, Moses bows and worships, no other gods, feats of unleavened bread, firstborn redeemed to God, rest on seventh day, forty days with God, gets second copy of Ten Commandments, face shone because he talked with God
keep the sabbath or you’ll be put to death, contributions for the tabernacle, a call for skillful craftsmen, Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God to devise artistic designs and to teach
Craftsman work, people give more contributions than are needed for the work and are restrained from giving, they make the tabernacle, detailed description of how it was made,
Bezalel makes the Ark of the Testimony, the table for the bread of the presence, the lampstand, and the altar of incense
Bazalel makes the alter of burnt offering offering, the bronze basin, the court, and the materials for the tabernacle are totaled
Making the priestly garments, they finish all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, they bring it all to Moses and he blesses them.
The Tabernacle erected, it and all its contents are anointed, the priests are washed and anointed also, set up the altar of burnt offering and and offered up the burnt and grain offering, the cloud covered the tent of meeting and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. A cloud by day and fire by night throughout all their journeys, and when it lifted and moved the Israelites set out. When it stayed, they stayed. God directed them in a very personal and visual way.
