Matthew 1 Sermon by Kyle Schwahn | Sermon Analysis

For an explanation of what this post is about, check out this post. The sermon I'm analyzing.

My Attempt before Listening to the Sermon:

Title: Jesus, Son of David, Son of Abraham, Son of God
Telos: The promised king savior to come has arrived. He is the better David, the better Abraham, the better Israel.

 My Outline:

1. Jesus the Son of David
2. Jesus the Son of Abraham
3. Jesus the Son of God
4. Jesus the Promised Savior

Walking Through the Text:

- significance of the genealogy of Jesus
- significance of Abraham and David being mentioned
- explain deportation to Babylon, brief history of Israel
- significance of Abraham and David being mentioned again at the end in vs. 17
- brief cultural background on Mary, Joseph, and marriage in their culture
- significance of the angel appearing to Joseph
- point out how angel calls him "Joseph, son of David,
- why does it say "do not fear to take Mary as your wife?
- that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit
- explain term immaculate conception is actually Catholic
- vs. 23 from these 2 verses in Isaiah:

Isaiah 7:14
[14] Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (ESV)

Isaiah 8:8
[8] and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on, reaching even to the neck, and its outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.” (ESV)

Isaiah 8:10
[10] Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
speak a word, but it will not stand,
for God is with us. (ESV)

- explain Immanuel means God is with us
- When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him
- We abide in the vine by obeying God's commands as Jesus did

John 15:10–11
[10] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. [11] These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (ESV)

- "but knew her not until she had given birth to a son," Joseph is a patient obedient man
- and he called his name Jesus, Joseph was obedient

Takeaways:

- I loved how Kyle used the 5 names for Jesus as an outline to walk us through the text. I would not have thought of that and it worked really well. I love how he goes to the OT and brings us forward to Jesus. Again I notice how well Kyle spread out the content of his sermon pretty equally between his 5 points. I need to get better at this. Kyle doesn't explain every single verse of the text but focuses on going deeper with the parts he wants to highlight. It allows him to go deeper and teach us a lot! He has a simple clean outline that helps us follow him through the sermon easily. I can learn from that.
