Below are simple notes I jotted down while reading the book of 1 Corinthians in the ESV.
ch. 1 v. 8 powerful! | vv. 10-11 no divisions, no quarelling but unity | v. 20 "Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?" wow, what do you think that means? | vv. 23-25 an important verse, gives us a lot to think about | v. 27-29 incredible, and we need to be reminded of this daily, this shows we should have no pride in ourselves and can only boast in what the Lord has done for us through Jesus | v. 31 “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
ch. 2 v. 10 God reveals through the Spirit, talk about that, Christianity is much more than knowing truths, these are truths we couldn't have even accepted without the work of God through his Spirit, see v. 14 | v. 16 what a promise: "we have the mind of Christ"
ch. 3 v. 6 God gives the growth, we share the truth and God saves | v. 16 you are God's temple | v. 19 wisdom of world folly w/ God
ch. 4 vv. 8-14 Paul speaks ironically to the proud Corinthians, v. 14 to admonish them
ch. 5 sexual immorality of a very bad kind, kick him out and cleanse, don't assosiate with Christians who are sexually imoral, not unbelievers for then you'd have to leave the world, don't judge outsiders (we do this a lot) | vv. 12-13 highlight
ch. 6 v. 1; 4-8 don't go to the law w/ saints| v. 7 why not rather suffer wrong and be defrauded | v. 11 HIGHLIGHT such were some of you but you were washed, sanctified, justified | v. 13 the body is not meant for sexual immorality but for the lord | v. 16 he joined to prostitute becomes one body with her | v. 18 sexually immoral sins against own body | vv. 19-20 HIGHLIGHT
ch. 7 vv. 1-4 husbands and wives bodies are not their own | vv. 10-16 marriage, divorce | v. 19 & v. 24 circumcision don't matter, stay as you were when called, put that flint knife down brother, but keep the commandments of God |
ch. 8 v. 1 knowledge puffs up, love builds up | v. 4 an idol has no real existance, no God but one | v. 6 we exist for God | v. 12 we sin against Christ when we sin against fellow Christians | v. 9; 14 pay pastors who get their living by the gospel | v. 16 HIGHLIGHT | v. 19 Paul became a servant to all to win them to Christ | v. 22 HIGHLIGHT become all things to all people that he might save some | v. 27 HIGHLIGHT disipline your body so as not to become disqualified
ch. 9 vv. 15-16 doesn't want anything to get in the way of his preaching of the gospel | v. 22-23 all things to all men that he might save some |
ch. 10 v. 13 HIGHLIGHT, God always gives us a way out from temptation | v. 20 some false Gods that people worship are demons! | v. 24 HIGHLIGHT | v. 31 HIGHLIGHT
ch. 11 vv. 17-18 it's for the worse that they come together as a church, that's pretty horrible! | vv. 23-26 what we often read during communion / the Lord's table | vv. 28-31 make sure you're in a right place w/ God and others before you take communion
ch. 12 v. 20 many parts one body | v. 25 HIGHLIGHT | v. 31 earnestly seek the higher gifts
ch. 13 v. 1-3 love is so important | v. 4-8 HIGHLIGHT love is... SO GOOD!!! | v. 13 the greatest of these is love
ch. 14 v. 4-5 HIGHLIGHT speaks in a tongue builds himself up, | vv. 13-19 HIGHLIGHT | v. 39 HIGHLIGHT
ch. 15 v. 6 so cool! The people reading this letter could have gone and talked to those people about seeing Jesus | v. 14 HIGHLIGHT | vv. 16-20 so important and cool, Christ was raised, and because of that we know we too will be raised if we are in him | v. 17 we often talk of Jesus's death saving us, and it has, but without his resurrection we would also still be in our sins - we must never leave out the importance of his resurrection | vv. 21-22 HIGHLIGHT as in Adam all die so also in Christ may all be made alive, AMEN! v. 33 HIGHLIGHT bad company ruins good morals | v. 42 what is raised is imperishable! Amazing | v. 44 spiritual body | vv. 47-49 also bear the image of the man of heaven - Jesus, how does this relate to Gen. 2:27, male and female created in the image of God, is this like a restoration to that original image? Though all humans, Christian or not, are made in the image of God, Christians WILL, future tense, bear the image of Jesus and maybe that's a restoration of how we are in His image? v. 50 HIGHLIGHT | v. 51-54 new imperishable bodies given, for those alive it will be an instantanious change | v. 54-58 victory over death through Christ, so awesome!
ch. 16 vv. 13-14 HIGHLIGHT act like men | v. 22 wow, strong language, if anyone has no love for the Lord let him be accursed
